This Is a Sign From God -- A Collection       -- Introduction

A few years ago, I discovered a valley in the northeastern U.S. where local churchpeople were making their own billboards and roadsigns, mostly bearing Bible texts. These fascinated me, and before long I began photographing them, for my own pleasure, and for documentation.
Then, as I traveled  I began to notice other unique billboards and signs, mostly  with religious messages, and was drawn to photographing them as well. This hobby continues. Some non-religious billboards and signs which caught my eye have been added. Professionally produced billboards (like the black ones with the snappy messages from "God") don't particularly interest me.
My responses to these usually heartfelt messages range widely, from bemusement to irony to scorn to utter agreement. Mostly I'll keep those to myself here; but like many rules, this one may have exceptions.
New images will be added as they appear on the Blog; I have several dozen already, so check back often. Visitors are encouraged to tip me off to the locations of other such billboards or "public messages."  You're also welcome to submit photos, and if I like them they could be added to the collection.  (Please note, however, that any photo submitted to this site carries with it the non-exclusive right for me to reproduce it in any form, giving credit to the photographer.)
I also have fantasies of a "coffee-table book" of these images. Its title was to be, "The Roadside Bible."
But then, in late 2003, the right title was shown me on US Highway 30, near Gettysburg PA. One doesn't argue with a sign from God.
